International Youth Center – Burgas took part in the European Researchers’ Night for the first time this year, partnering with PlanetUm Science Center and “Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov” University. The vice-rector of the university, Prof. Dr. Sotir Sotirov opened the event.
We introduced young people from 6 schools in the city of Burgas, to the world of science and new technologies.
The youngsters were divided into two groups – “Natural Sciences” and “Information Technologies” and visited the laboratories of the Inorganic Corpus and the University’s Center of Excellence for ICT.
During the event, the students attended two lectures related to young people’s online behavior and cybersecurity, where they received useful tips on how to recognize fake news and protect their digital identity.
The students also had the chance to dive into the world of the “Unknown Plankton” – an attractive demonstration presented by PlanetUm. The bravest among them took an active part in the joint demonstration of applied science together with the team of International Youth Center and representatives from the Department of Natural Sciences – Chemistry, Biology, Ecology. As part of the beginner friendly activity, the aspiring scientists learned how to make chemical traffic lights, elephant toothpaste, a “do it yourself” volcano and smoking cocktails.
We closed the event with a quiz, so we can see what everyone learned in the day. All participants demonstrated enthusiasm, impressive memory skills and knowledge. As a result of course, they received numerous prizes.
